The desire to give back to a community is natural and common. However, many people hesitate to follow through on this desire, usually because they are uncertain about the first step or how to get involved. Sometimes, they are overwhelmed by all the needs out in the world, which leads to feeling overloaded and doing nothing.
The truth is that there are thousands of little ways in which you can help your local community. While these ways may seem minuscule, each act adds to the community and helps it grow or heal. Here are a few ways that you can help.
Volunteering
Volunteering is arguably one of the most common ways people choose to give back to their community. At any given time, there are dozens of nonprofit organizations in need of helping hands. Look at local bulletin boards, or visit an online volunteer matching site to find volunteer opportunities near you.
Join a Board
Joining a board allows people to use their individual skillets to help a non-profit organization. Whether your skillset is financial, program management, a great leader, IT, your network, or a passion for a cause because being on a board allows you to use your experience and personal talents to improve the organization, which improves your community. A great place to look at being on a board is BoardBuild, where you can get connected with boards that need board members.
Clean Up
Do you live in a neighborhood that could use a little TLC? In other words, do you always see trash along the roads when you’re walking about? Take a half-hour out of your day to go and clean up that trash. Not only are you doing your part to help the environment, but you’re making the community look cleaner.
Shop Local
Shopping may not seem like a great way to help your community. After all, you’re merely buying stuff you need or want, right? However, if you make a point of shopping locally, you are actively stimulating the local economy. You can even double this boon by supporting small businesses in your area.
Donate Books
The odds are good that there are families in your community that can’t afford books for their children. This makes it challenging for them to encourage their little ones to read. You can help by donating your used and unwanted books. Ask your local library or school if they accept books. Alternatively, look for a little free library that will accept your books. If there is no little free library around, consider setting up your own.
Donate Blood
Donating blood is a quick way to save a life – literally. Blood is always in need, hence the reason for so many blood drives. You can easily donate a pint of blood without harm to yourself, but doing so will put so much good into the world. This is extremely important to consider if you have a universal blood type, so keep this in mind.
I have enjoyed the majority of the boards and volunteer opportunities that I have been a part of in Fort Worth and have been lucky to learn from each one for myself and give back to my community.
